Lot 2550
1795 $10 Capped Bust. 13 leaves below eagle. PCGS graded EF-45. A well struck and very pleasing example of our first gold coin. The planchet is basically problem-free, lightly toned with traces of mint luster still adhering about the protected areas of the devices. A very popular first year of issue type coin that is always in great demand. Pop of 25 in this grade (PCGS # 8551) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 23,000.

1801 $10 Capped Bust. PCI graded MS-61. Well struck except for stars 1 and 2 which are a trifle weak as made. We note some faint hairlines isolated to the reverse, probably the result of an old cleaning; still, quite a nice high grade example of our early Capped Bust to Right gold eagle.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

1801 $10 Capped Bust. T-25. Rarity 3. PCGS graded AU-58. A well struck example, some softness appears on the stars and all on a problem-free planchet. Light golden in color with lots of mint luster still intact. Popular for a choice type set as this is the most common early eagle. Pop of 54 (PCGS # 8564) .

1803 $10 Capped Bust. Extra star in cloud. T-30. Rarity 4. PCGS graded AU-53. Very small 14th star punched within last cloud, at right. Well struck on a basically problem-free planchet with some scattered marks here and there commensurate for this numerical grade. Plenty of golden-orange luster remains in the protected areas to easily justify this high grade. A total of 7 coins graded by PCGS. Pop of 1 with 4 in MS-62, 1 in MS-63 and 1 in MS-64 (PCGS # 88565) .

Very rare in strictly uncirculated condition as the population report clearly confirms. Pop of 4 with 4 in MS-63 and 1 in MS-64. While the 1850 Large Date is more common than the Small Date variety, this specimen is close to Condition Census for the variety.

1871-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. A nice even strike with plenty of luster still intact and rich golden-orange in color. This is a dazzling specimen of one of the scarcest of all Carson City issues. The early Carson City issues of the 1870s were distributed regionally rather than internationally thus surviving examples are virtually never seen in such high grade as this. In fact, the Eliasberg specimen was EF-40 and the Bass coin was AU-50, both well within the condition census for this date. Pop of 4 with 1 in MS-60 and 1 in MS-62.
Estimated Value $23,000 - 25,000.

Lot 2563
1874 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A notable rarity in the Proof eagle series, and the only Cameo Proof (in any grade) yet certified by PCGS. With an original mintage of only 20 pieces, one cannot hope to find a nicer or a prettier coin. The number of survivors is estimated to be around 10 pieces. This coin is easily identifiable by a spot of color on the obverse rim at 6:30 and a tinier spot just below Liberty's earlobe. It does not match the Trompeter or the Bass coin (which appeared twice); this one may be ex-Garrett. From 1997 to 2001, only four Proof 1874 Eagles appeared at auction, ranging in grade from Proof-60 to Proof-64. Thus, the opportunity to purchase a gem of this quality is almost rarer than the coin itself!
Estimated Value $75,000 - 80,000.

1876-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-50. A very attractive example exhibiting a nice even strike, traces of mint luster in the protected areas about the peripheries and light golden-orange in color. Only 4,696 examples were struck this year and relatively few seem to have been exported, the result being most were probably melted. Today the population is very low as both major services attest to. When offered, the 1876-CC is usually found only in lower grades as Walter Breen comments, "Extremely rare above VF." Pop of 7 with 8 in AU-53, 2 in AU-55 and 2 in AU-58.
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

1907 $10 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65. A glittering Proof example of the last year of the Liberty Head type. Boldly struck from highly polished dies -- in fact, the reverse die was polished so heavily that some of the vertical lines in the shield have begun to thin out and the right tip of the scroll has been partially effaced. The obverse has traces of cameo contrast, the reverse more so, but this date rarely comes with the deep cameo finishes seen on earlier dates. This is a truly outstanding example, one of only 5 graded this nice by NGC. In fact, the only finer example of which we are aware is a lone PCGS Proof-66 Cameo, but that piece would bring considerably more than the estimate range we've placed on this beauty. In this case, you can purchase a coin that is nearly as nice at a far more attractive price. One of only 74 Proofs struck in this year.
Estimated Value $21,000 - 23,000.

1907 $10 Indian. No periods. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. At first glance, this marvelous coin appears to be MS67. What PCGS sees to call it only MS64 would take some imagination thus our Premium Quality designation. The luster is booming, the strike is deep and full, and there appear to be zero abrasions. Hairlines? None apparent to this cataloguer. Best of all, the coin gleams with a simply exquisite, deep golden red color. Worth strong bids from knowing collectors! (PCGS # 8852) .
